We are running out of time...
Dear Friend of Liberty,
The next few weeks will determine if the voters of New York’s First Congressional District, and the rest of the State, will have the chance to vote for Liberty. We are currently in the process of petitioning for ballot access, not only for my race against Tim Bishop, but for the rest of the Libertarian candidates throughout New York. For me to make ballot access, I will need at least 3500 signatures to be on the ballot, and since many of those signatures will likely be challenged by both the Democrats and the Republicans, we realistically need many more than that. The statewide petitions for our candidates for Governor (Warren Redlich), US Senate (Randy Credico and John Clifton), and several other offices will require at least 15,000 signatures. All of this must be accomplished by August 15th or the best we can hope for is a few write in votes. You can find the petition on my website at http://www.voteforcantwell.com/FINAL-Cantwell-Fischer-2010-LP.pdf or get in contact with me and I will have printed copies delivered to you.
I believe that this year’s elections will be amongst the most important elections to have ever taken place in America. Now more than ever, people are becoming aware of the awful similarities between the Republicrats and the Demopublicans, and they are looking for alternatives. People are hungry for Liberty, and they are realizing more and more, that the two party system offers no such thing. The families and friends of our soldiers want their loved ones home safely and without any undue delay, but are finding that few of those in power or seeking power, have any intentions of ending these wasteful, illegal, and unnecessary wars. People are realizing that our economy is in serious danger of going from recession to depression due to socialist economic policies, and that both parties offer only slightly different flavors of socialism in response.
In the First Congressional District, I am the only candidate who is promising to fight for Sound Money, Peace, Free Markets, Property Rights, and Constitutional Government. I am the only candidate who is not plugged into the elitist political establishment. I am the only candidate who would rather tell the truth and lose, than lie in order to win. I am the only candidate willing to speak honestly, specifically, in writing, and publicly about my positions on the issues.
I know some of you may think that without the backing of a major party, hundreds of thousands of dollars, and willingness to sacrifice my principles, I have no chance of winning this election. But that is not true at all. I would concede that it would of course be very difficult, and even unlikely for me to win this election under these circumstances. But in the end, it is entirely up to the voters who wins, and as long as they have the choice to vote for me, they have the power to elect me if that is what they want.
Even if it were true that I had no chance of winning, it is no less important that the First Congressional District of New York has a Constitutional choice come November. Voting for an unlikely candidate is not a waste of your vote, John Quincy Adams said, “Always vote for principle, though you may vote alone, you may cherish the sweetest reflection that your vote is never lost.”. There are many reasons to vote Libertarian, or for any other independent or third party candidate. For one, If the Republican and Democratic parties, in cooperation with their parasite spinoffs (the Conservative, Independence, and Working Families parties) are allowed to take your vote for granted, then that is exactly what they will do, and you will sink further and further into the depths of statism and enslavement. Voting Libertarian sends a loud and clear message that you are an informed voter who cares more about Liberty, than about being on the winning team, and with each Libertarian vote that is counted, that message becomes louder and louder. Every candidate wants your vote, and by voting Libertarian, you let every future candidate know that to get your vote, they will have to fight for Liberty. By voting for an unlikely candidate, you are thanking that candidate for his or her efforts and sacrifices spent in defense of Liberty. And last but most certainly not least, the only way a candidate can go from being unlikely to being elected, is by people voting for him or her.
Here in the First District, there is only one candidate who believes firmly in the limits the Constitution places on the Federal Government, me. Tim Bishop, the incumbent Democrat, has voted for Cap & Trade, the Health Care Takeover, empowering the Federal Reserve in the name of "Wall Street Reform" and so much anti-constitutional, anti-liberty legislation it would take days for me to list. The Republican Party does not offer us a much better alternative.
There will be a primary between the following people.
Randy Altschuler, who moved to this district from New Jersey for the sole purpose of buying this election with the millions of dollars he made outsourcing jobs to foreign countries. His partner in that Operation, Joseph Sigelman, is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and Randy was a member of the Green Party, which supports a single payer government run health care plan and a ban on fossil fuels.
George Demos was a lawyer at the Securities and Exchange commission until he resigned shortly after being cited for violating SEC rules in that he had improperly disclosed protected, nonpublic information about a whistleblower to the counsel for that whistleblower's employer, a major Wall Street bank, JPMorgan Chase. I had the opportunity to discuss some important issues with George, and I asked him which article of the Constitution allowed for the existence of the SEC, to which he responded "I don't know, in 17 years, I never even thought about it" I suggested to him that maybe now that he was running for Congress, perhaps it would be a good time to read the Constitution. I also asked him about his opinions on the Patriot Act, and he was in full support of it.
Chris Cox is the grandson of Richard Nixon, and the son of NYS GOP Chairman Ed Cox. He is a member of the League of Conservation Voters, which worked hard to ensure passage of the American Clean Energy and Security Act in the House of Representatives in June 2009, taking the unprecedented step of withholding their endorsement from any member of Congress who did not vote for the bill, they oppose off shore drilling, and they have rated Tim Bishop 100%. He has been endorsed by Jeb Bush. He is also a lawyer.
But none of this is going to matter one bit if I don’t get on the ballot, and without your immediate and meaningful assistance, I will not make it on the ballot. I need to determine if we will accomplish this goal or not, and at the current pace, we will not achieve that goal. I stepped up to run, so that I could fight for your Liberty and my own, because I realized that the Constitution would not protect me if I did not protect the Constitution, and that only by fighting for the rights of all Americans, could I protect my own rights. I need to ask you now, if you are going to help me fight. If you are willing to help me achieve ballot access, then we will achieve ballot access. But if you are not willing, then I will have no choice but to drop out of this race and focus my efforts elsewhere in the fight for Liberty. If you are ready to step up and do your part in this fight, here is what I need from you. Contact me, either through the contact form on my website www.voteforcantwell.com, or by email at

To estimate how many signatures you are comfortable committing to, figure that you can collect at least 5 signatures per hour if you are in a place with a steady stream of people and you approach them all. If you can be charismatic and get people’s attention quickly, it should be possible to get a dozen or more each hour. Multiply this by the number of hours you are willing to commit towards this effort. If just 20 people would commit to just 10 signatures a day from today (July 26th) until August 15th, we would have so many signatures, we probably wouldn’t even be challenged. I am asking that you take responsibility for this on your own, we all have different work schedules and things going on in our lives and it is impossible for me to direct you where or when to petition, you need to take the initiative to find events to petition at, or to stand outside your local supermarket, or to bring your petitions to work, or school, there are lots of ways and places for you to do this, do what works best for you.
A few tips for petitioning…
Who can gather signatures?
Any registered voter in New York State can gather signatures regardless of party affiliation.
Who can sign the petition?

The Approach
This is the most important part, many people who will sign this petition, would sign pretty much any petition if approached correctly. You only have a few seconds to make that initial impact, so use it wisely. I would suggest approaching people by saying “Hello (Sir, Miss, Ma’am, Folks, whatever) could I get you to sign my petition? My friend is running for Congress”. This makes it personal, and interesting. Asking people “Are you registered to vote?” as an opening line will not get their attention most of the time. Attempting to give them more information than necessary as an opening line, is generally a bad idea, since people who are walking past you would generally prefer to make things quick.
Frequently asked questions…
Don’t answer questions about issues if you are not sure of my stance, sometimes it might be best not to answer even if you do. “I’m not 100% sure exactly, I’m doing this because I know he’s honest and he is a Libertarian Constitutionalist” is a good way to avoid questions you can’t or don’t want to answer.
People will frequently say “But I don’t know anything about him”, or something along those lines. Explain first that this is only a ballot access petition, all it does is get me onto the ballot so people can decide if they want to vote for me or not vote for me. They are not supporting me as a candidate, endorsing any position on any issue, changing their party affiliation, voting for me, or making any commitment of any sort. I frequently say “Do you think people should be able to vote for whoever they want?” most people will say yes, and I respond “Then this is a good petition for you to sign, since it will give the voters that choice”.
People will often ask what issues I’m running on, a few easy answers are “In general, Chris just wants the government to get out of our faces and let us live our lives under our own power and without interference so long as we don’t hurt anybody.” Or “Bring the troops home, repeal the health care bill, abolish the income tax, and drastically cut the size of federal government.”
What is Libertarian?
The Libertarian Party is the third largest political party in America, we’re very fiscally conservative, but socially tolerant, we don’t think the government should be getting interfering in our financial or personal lives, unless we hurt somebody else.
There is more of course, but you’ll get the hang of it. If you have any questions, I am of course here to help you and answer them.
In Liberty,
Chris Cantwell
